Wellness Exams

Puppies & Kittens

We recommend an inital visit within 72 hours of adding a new family member to your home. This initial visit includes a full comprehensive exam by one of our doctors, parasite screening, and vaccine consultation. At the completion of your visit, we will send you home with a customized puppy/kitten kit to meet the needs of your household.

Adult Pets

We recommend a comprehensive well pet exam each year for adult pets. The exam includes a physical examination by one of our doctors, parasite screening, and vaccine and preventative evalutaion. We recommend annual blood work after the age of 2. Blood tests evaluate the fuction of your pet’s internal organs and allow us to identify and treat potential health issues.

Diagnostic Services

Our hospital is equipped to provide diagnostic and therapeutic services to care for your pets’ complete health care needs.

Laboratory

Our in-house laboratory allows us to make important treatment decisions rapidly. We also utilize commercial veterinary laboratories for specialized diagnostics and consultations when needed.

Radiology

Our high resolution digital radiographs help to aid in the diagnosis of many disorders. In order to provide the best quality of medicine your pets radiographs are read by our doctors and sent out for interpretation by a board certified radiologist.

Ultrasound

Our ultrasound is similar to those used on humans every day. Ultrasound uses sound waves to produce a real time image and is particularly effective imaging soft tissue and structures. We also have a board certified ultrasonographer who can come to our clinic and perform ultrasounds.

ECG

We employ comprehensive monitoring equipment when needed to constantly monitor the vitals of your pet. Some of the vital signs monitored by this equipment are pulse, temperature, blood pressure, and ECG (Electrocardiogram). We also consult with cardiology specialists as needed.

Surgery

Our state-of-the-art surgical suite provides for the performance of a wide variety of surgical procedures, including laser surgery. Laser surgery offers a quicker recovery time with less pain and less bleeding.

As an AAHA accredited practice, we have Licensed Veterinary Technicians monitoring your pet while it is under anesthesia. During the entire time your pet is under anesthesia, we monitor and control several vital signs including fluid administration, temperature, pulse, respiration, blood pressure, and blood oxygenation.

After your pet’s surgery, your pet is moved to our recovery area where we perform therapy laser treatments on their surgical site to increase blood flow and speed the healing process.

Exotics

At SBAH we welcome all kinds of exotic pets including small mammals, birds, and reptiles. We understand that each species has individual and unique needs.

Except for wildlife native to Texas, we welcome all types of exotic pets. Native Texas wildlife is best cared for by trained and licensed rehabilitators at TWRC however emergency care is provided to any animal in need.

We are available to provide preventative health care to most exotic pets, including:

  • Birds – all species including parrots, poultry and waterfowl
  • Small Mammals – rabbits, ferrets, guinea pigs, mice, rats, hamsters, gerbils, sugar gliders, hedgehogs, and others
  • Reptiles and amphibians – Non-venomous snakes, lizards, turtles, tortoises, and amphibians

Specialized husbandry required for exotic pets can play a significant role in their overall health and well-being. An exotic pet owner should research their pet’s particular environmental and dietary needs and be well-informed about the species’ basic requirements. A veterinarian who understands these needs can help you to provide the best care that you can for your pet. Please do not hesitate to call regarding specific questions that you may have about caring for your pet.

Semi-annual physical exams are needed for exotic species. Regular exams enable us to monitor your pets weight and general health to track their progress and to detect subtle changes that may be early warning signs of significant health problems. Diagnostic and treatment options for exotic pets may not be as readily available as with dogs and cats because of patient size, stress, or cost constraints. This can make early changes on physical exam and preventative care even more important in the early detection and prevention of problems.

Dental Care

Dental health is important to your pet’s overall health and often times dental issues are not recognized by the owner. Bad oral health can result in dental infections, heart & kindney problems, tooth abscess, decreased appetite, lethargy and most importantly…pain. Many owners report a marked increase in energy in their pets after a dental treatment.

We have a state of the art dental suite (a specialized room used just for pet dentistry). Our dental services are performed under anesthesia and include teeth cleaning, polishing and application of dental sealants. We also perform digital dental X-rays, tooth extractions and oral surgery.
